What we collect
We collect the following information when you use Botanicaly:
- Account Information: Email address and profile information for your Botanicaly account.
- Plant Data: Information about your plants, including species, photos, care schedules, and custom notes. “Ask about this plant” saves your most recent conversation to your account as text, so it can continue where you left off. A photo you send when you ask about one of your plants is stored for up to 24 hours, so an interrupted answer can be recovered. It is kept in the plant’s history only if you save the observation. Photos are deleted with your account.
- Location Data: We collect optional location data for local weather and care recommendations. Newer app versions reduce new device-derived locations to city level. A location saved by an older version may remain more precise until you run a newer version while signed in; the app then migrates the location saved in your profile to city level.
- Photos: Images you upload or take using your camera for plant identification and tracking.
- Feedback you choose to send us in the app. We use it only to improve Botanicaly, and it is deleted with your account.
Before you add an account: The plant records and photos you save are stored under a temporary identifier tied to this installation of the app. They are used to run your care plan and, under the same temporary identifier, for product analytics such as how many plants you have. They are deleted when you delete them in the app. A temporary identifier that is not linked to an account within 30 days is deleted together with its plants and photos. If you uninstall the app before you add an account, you cannot get that data back. You can delete everything from the Settings screen. We do not sell or share this data.
How we use your data
- Provide plant identification services.
- Generate personalized care schedules and notifications.
- Fetch relevant weather data for your plants.
- Improve our app experience and features.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
Legal bases
Under the GDPR, we use your data on these legal bases:
- Contract: to run the app and your account, including plant identification, care plans, reminders, local weather, “Ask about this plant”, Botanicaly Pro, and support when you contact us.
- Legitimate interest: to keep Botanicaly secure, prevent abuse and enforce fair-use limits, find and fix crashes, use product analytics in the app to improve it, including which website pages lead to installs and subscriptions, and measure visits to the public website with Google Analytics. You can object to this at any time. You can turn off product analytics on your phone with the Usage analytics switch in the app’s Settings.
- Legal obligation: to keep billing records for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
Third-party services
- Google Firebase: Authentication (email, Google, and Apple sign-in), Firestore database, Cloud Storage for plant photos, Cloud Functions, Crashlytics for crash reports, and product-usage Analytics linked after sign-in to an internal account identifier, not your email address or name. See Firebase privacy information.
- Google Gemini: Botanicaly uses Gemini through our Cloud Functions for AI plant identification and reviewing possible causes of visible plant problems. “Ask about this plant” also uses Gemini. Per Gemini API policy, your photos and prompts are not used to train Google’s models. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- MET Norway and GeoNames: Botanicaly searches a bundled copy of the GeoNames dataset, so the city name you type is not sent to a third-party geocoder. Under the MET Norway terms, MET Norway receives only the city-level coordinates used for local forecasts. Your account identity is never sent. Newer app versions reduce device-derived coordinates to city level before sending them and, when you are signed in, reduce a more precise location stored in your profile when you run the app. Older versions may have sent or retained a more precise coordinate; updating does not delete data that may already have been transmitted.
- RevenueCat: Subscription status for Botanicaly Pro, linked to the same internal account identifier as product analytics, not to your email address or name. RevenueCat also receives an analytics identifier for this installation of the app and, if you installed the app from our website, which website page or campaign led to the install, so we can see which pages lead to subscriptions. Purchases are processed by the App Store or Google Play. We and RevenueCat do not receive your card details. See the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
- Public website analytics: Google Analytics measures visits and interactions on the public website and sets cookies to do so (listed under Cookies on our website). The website shows no cookie banner. Google receives the page you view, the app buttons you see or tap, the website you came from, and the technical details every browser sends, such as your IP address and browser type. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, the website does not load Google Analytics. See the Google Privacy Policy.
- Vercel: Hosts the public website and receives website requests, including your IP address. See the Vercel Privacy Policy.
- AgentMail and Amazon SES: Our support email provider, AgentMail, uses Amazon SES to deliver email to and from hello@botanicaly.com. When you email us, they receive your email address, your message, and any attachments. See the AgentMail Privacy Policy.
Data storage & security
Your data is securely stored using Google Firebase infrastructure. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, but remember that no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
Your rights
- Export: You can export your plant records as a CSV file at any time from the Settings screen.
- Delete: You can permanently delete your account and all associated data from the Settings screen.
- Access and correction: You can see and update your information in the app, or ask us by email for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Object and restrict: You can object to processing based on legitimate interest, and ask us to restrict processing, for example while we check a correction you asked for.
- Portability: You can ask for the data you gave us in a machine-readable format. The CSV export in Settings covers your plant records.
- Complaint: You can complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) at imy.se, or to the data protection authority where you live.
